How Much Does Custom 3D Printing Cost in the UK? (Real Prices)

The short answer

Small custom pieces usually cost from about £8, replacement parts and brackets from about £10, and batches of 10 or more small items can come down to around £1.50 each. The price depends mostly on size, print time, material and whether we have to design it from scratch. At Hatch3D the quote is free, and nothing is printed until you've agreed the price.

  6. FAQ

"How much would it cost to print…?" is the question we get most from people who've never used a 3D printing service. The honest answer is "it depends", so here's exactly what it depends on, with real prices from our own price list.

The short answer: a price range

This is the price guide we work to for custom jobs. Every job is quoted individually, but most land in these ranges:

Type of jobPrice guide
Print from your 3D filefrom £10
Simple fix from a photo (knob, clip, spacer, bracket)£15–£35 incl. design
Bigger parts and prototypesquoted, design time shown
Business batches and branded items (10+)from £1.50 each

For comparison, the personalised items in our shop, which are made the same way, start at £4 for a name keyring, and made-to-measure pieces like a Gridfinity drawer kit are priced by size.

What drives the cost?

Four things make up nearly every quote.

1. Size and how much plastic it uses

Filament (the plastic) is sold by the kilogram, so a solid, chunky part costs more in material than a small, thin one. Material is rarely the biggest cost on small items, though. On a keyring it's pennies.

2. Print time

This is the big one. A 3D printer builds an object one thin layer at a time, and bigger or taller objects take longer. Small pieces like keyrings and tags are quick. Large pieces can take most of a day: a published design for a personalised dog bowl holder, for example, lists a print time of about 22 hours and about 360 g of plastic. While a printer is busy with one job it can't print anything else, so long prints cost more.

3. Material and colour

We print in two main plastics:

Material Good for Notes
PLA Gifts, decorations, desk items, models Huge range of colours and finishes; softens at around 50 °C, so not for hot cars
PETG Pet products, outdoor and practical parts Tougher and copes with more heat and water

Our PLA vs PETG vs TPU guide compares the plastics in more detail.

Special finishes (silk, glitter, iridescent and tri-colour) cost a little more, from £1 to £1.50 extra on our shop items. Multi-colour prints take longer because the printer changes filament between colours.

4. Design work

If you send a ready-made 3D file (STL, 3MF or OBJ), we check it, set it up and print it. If you send a photo, a sketch or just an idea, we have to model it first, and that design time is part of the price. Simple shapes take minutes to model. A part that has to fit something precisely, like a replacement clip, takes measuring, a test print and sometimes a second version.

Five example jobs, priced

These are examples using our real prices, so you can see how the numbers work. They're illustrations, not customer stories.

Job What's involved Price
A name keyring Off the shelf: you type the name and pick two colours £4, or 3 for £10
30 keyrings for a party or club One colour scheme, a different name on each From £1.50 each for 10+
A replacement clip or bracket Measure, model, test print, final print £15–£35
A personalised desk name plate Off the shelf: name and colours £14
A personalised dog bowl One large print, bowl and name together from £22

Notice the pattern: anything we've already designed is cheap to personalise, because the hard part is done. A one-off part that has to be designed and tested costs more, because most of the cost is design time rather than printing.

Files vs photo vs idea: how quoting works

You don't need a 3D file to get a quote. The request form for our custom 3D printing service asks what you're starting with:

  • A 3D file. The quickest to quote. We check it fits our printers (up to 34 × 32 cm) and is printable, then quote on time and material. Upload it to our instant 3D printing estimate to see a price straight away, or read how STL printing works.
  • A photo or sketch. Include a ruler or coin in the photo for scale, and the key measurements if it has to fit something. Our page on 3D printed replacement parts from a photo shows what to measure.
  • Just an idea. Describe it in a sentence or two. We'll ask questions if we need to.

Tell us how many you need and when by. Ten of something is often much cheaper per piece than one, because the setup is shared.

"If it fits on the printer, we can probably make it. The quote is free, and you don't pay a penny until you're happy with the price and the date."

How to get a quote in 24 hours

  1. Fill in the custom 3D printing request. It takes about two minutes, and you can attach photos or files.
  2. We reply within 24 hours, Monday to Saturday, with a price and a ready date.
  3. If you're happy, you approve and pay, and we print it in Colchester. We post it, or you collect it free from our Colchester office by arrangement.

There are a few things we can't make: characters and logos owned by other companies (no Pokémon or car badges, for example), and anything we don't think would be safe once printed in plastic. We're always happy to design something original instead.

If you're local, our page on 3D printing in Colchester explains how to order and collect.

FAQ

Is the quote free?

Yes. There's no charge for a quote and no obligation to go ahead.

Do I need to send a 3D file?

No. A photo, sketch or description is fine. We'll design it and include that time in the quote.

What's the biggest thing you can print?

Up to 34 × 32 cm in one piece. Bigger things can sometimes be printed in parts and joined.

How long does a custom job take?

We start simple jobs within 24 hours of you approving the quote. Parts that need a test fit take longer. We'll give you a date with the price.

Do you do discounts for clubs, schools and businesses?

Batches of 10 or more small items start from around £1.50 each. Send the details and we'll quote.
